By Nicky

A lot of people heard about speed reading and the possibility to increase your reading skills, but only a few actually know and realize what this is all about. However, if you don’t try it, you have no chances of realizing its benefits and therefore you won’t be able to improve the time it takes to read and comprehend certain words. It looks like there are a lot of people (both students and serious businessmen) who would like to develop their reading potential, but unfortunately they can take this decision for various reasons. The biggest barrier is because they are too worried about will it help or not? All techniques for fast reading work great, but you have to find the one that suits you better. That’s why following a speed reading course in a real class is so effective, in comparison with the information you can get when either listening or reading a book on this subject. It’s better when you hear and see with your own eyes these things from a person who already managed to master speed reading. A speed reading course will certainly help you if make the commitment to attentively follow it until you succeed with its implementation. While most of the programs can be explained in a few sentences, it’s really hard to actually learn this way. I remember my father subscribing me to a reading improving seminar when I was younger. Even if I never had the desire to learn a lot, it still managed to teach various interesting tricks and tips for increasing the speed of reading and most of them are being used by me even nowadays. That’s why I insist that you guys learn it live!

When willing to learn speed reading in a class, one of the first techniques that you are going to be told about is following the text and the main idea on a certain page with your index finger or a pen. This will help your eyes to focus better and to be able to follow in a faster tempo the whole reading process. Certain difficulties might be experienced at the very beginning, when just starting out and trying. However, these will slowly disappear in the long run, as soon as more practice is done and more experience accumulated. It is considered to be the easiest method to train your eyes to follow your fingers and keep the same pace without getting too tired of overwhelmed with information. However, even if beginners can be pleased and think that this particular speed reading method will efficiently work, the reality is a little bit different. Not all writings are alike and even if you managed to read a computer type document quite fast, you won’t be able to read a handwritten letter in the same way, using exactly the same technique. So, even this sounds and looks like a good strategy to begin following the main words and ideas while reading, our brain eye won’t be able to decipher the same writing pattern and will certainly look for methods to get accustomed to something else. For example, do you think that speed reading through a book of physics or chemistry is possible? I don’t really think so. An even if this answer is quite obvious, most speed reading courses that are instructing people to improve their reading and comprehending skills don’t tell this to anyone.

Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that won’t learn anything good when following a speed reading course or program. You will and in most of the cases and texts that you will be dealing with fast reading can and will be necessary be implemented. However, sometimes it is really not possible. When you have to learn something attentively, there is no use for speed reading. You just need to carefully move your vision on every word and be able to understand the meaning. So when is speed reading necessary after all? Well, it is necessary when dealing with a certain document, a letter, something of less importance, something that doesn’t contain a lot of essential information or material and thus doesn’t deserve your entire attention. The art of speed reading is learned by those people who will be required to read a bunch of technical and official documents in the future, during their career. I think that you guys realize that speed reading one of Jack London’s books is not really possible because such type of literature is based on emotions and is not always possible to be read just for the sake of getting the main idea and move on, the same that you would do when getting a document comprehended in order to be able and answer the basic questions about it. While some will explain these aspects when teaching you the skills of reading very fast, others won’t. Low quality and cheap speed reading courses will always begin with the fact that most of the text that you read has no second meaning and has to be taken at its first value. While this is partially true, it cannot be implemented when talking about artistic literature; and if you are a student willing to read several big books in several small days using speed reading techniques, this is not for you, go do your homework properly my friend!

Anyways, reading faster and better, with greater concentration and precision is possible. Nevertheless, this requires a lot of training and experience and is not possible to be achieved overnight. In most of the cases, years are required to assimilate the basics and be able to implement them. It’s important to realize that not all texts are the same. Technical documents can be exposed to your speed reading aptitudes, while other more complicate writings will certain create difficulties that won’t be so easily surpassed. One has to understand that no matter what he wants to learn in life, it’s all about crawling first, and then sprinting like a professional. Improving your reading skills takes time and doing it faster takes even more time. However, when following a live speed reading course in a class you have the chance to learn much more than when doing everything on your own, by trying to implement the techniques found in a book or eBook somewhere on the internet.
